Fertility First Visit: A Couple’s Checklist

Couple at a joint fertility consultation with doctors at Samanwi Clinics, Hyderabad

If you have been trying to conceive for 12 months, or for 6 months if the woman is 35 or older, both partners should be evaluated. A semen analysis is a standard early test for him. Cycle and ovulation assessment is the matching step for her. Samanwi Clinics in Saroornagar does both: Dr. Swathi Srirangam for gynecology and fertility, and Dr. Aman Chandra Deshpande for urology and male fertility.

When should a couple book the first visit?

Most couples conceive within a year of regular unprotected intercourse. Seek care after 12 months if the woman is under 35, and after 6 months if she is 35 or older. Book sooner if periods are very irregular, there is known endometriosis or pelvic infection, either partner has had cancer treatment, or there is a history of undescended testis, mumps orchitis, or previous groin surgery.

You do not need to have “failed” a treatment to be seen. The first visit is an evaluation, described on the infertility evaluation page.

What should you bring?

A short file saves repeat tests:

  • Cycle dates for the last three months, and how long you have been trying
  • Prior semen analysis, hormone tests, ultrasound, or HSG reports
  • Names of medicines and supplements you already take
  • Notes on smoking, heat exposure at work, and any erection or ejaculation difficulty

Which tests usually come first?

For her, the early steps are a history, examination, and tests aimed at ovulation, thyroid function, and the uterus and ovaries. Tube testing is added when the history suggests it, not on day one for every couple. For him, a semen analysis looks at count, movement, and shape. A low result is repeated before major decisions, because one sample can be affected by fever or a short gap since the last ejaculation.

Male-factor findings are assessed by Dr. Aman Chandra Deshpande. Read male infertility for the scope of that visit. If treatment leads to pregnancy, prenatal care continues with Dr. Swathi Srirangam.

Why does one clinic for both partners help?

Fertility plans stall when one partner is tested and the other is not. Seeing gynecology and urology in the same Saroornagar practice means the advice matches. IVF is one option among others, including timed intercourse, ovulation support, and IUI, and it is discussed after the results, not before them. Preservation choices, when relevant, are outlined under fertility preservation.

Common questions

How long should we try before seeing a doctor in Hyderabad?

Try for 12 months if the woman is under 35, and 6 months if she is 35 or older. Irregular cycles or a known fertility problem are reasons to go earlier.

Does the male partner need tests even if he feels well?

Yes. About half of couples have a male contribution. A semen analysis is the usual first test and does not require symptoms.

Will the first visit mean we start IVF?

No. The first visit decides which tests are needed. IVF is considered when results or age make it the appropriate next step.

Can we see both doctors at Samanwi Clinics?

Yes. Dr. Swathi Srirangam sees the female partner for gynecology and fertility. Dr. Aman Chandra Deshpande sees the male partner for urology and andrology.
