Prostate Health Check: What Men Should Know

Urologist consulting a man about prostate health at Samanwi Clinics, Saroornagar

A weak stream, night-time urination, urgency, or blood in the urine should be checked by a urologist. November is men’s health month, but those symptoms matter in any month. At Samanwi Clinics in Saroornagar, Dr. Aman Chandra Deshpande separates benign prostate enlargement from infection and from findings that need a cancer check. A blood test alone is not a prostate diagnosis.

What does the prostate change with age?

The prostate sits below the bladder and around the urine tube. After about 50 it often enlarges. That enlargement, called benign prostatic hyperplasia, can slow the stream and empty the bladder poorly. It is common, and it is not the same condition as prostate cancer. Both can exist, which is why symptoms still deserve an exam rather than a friend’s tablet.

The service details are on prostate health assessment and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Which symptoms should lead to a visit?

Book urology care if you notice:

  • A stream that is weaker, stops and starts, or takes longer than it used to
  • Getting up more than once most nights to pass urine
  • Sudden urgency, leakage, or a feeling that the bladder never empties
  • Blood in the urine, even once
  • Pain, fever, or inability to pass urine at all, which needs same-day care

What happens in the assessment?

The visit starts with a symptom score, a bladder and urine history, and an examination when it will change the plan. A urine test looks for blood and infection. An ultrasound may show how much urine stays after you void. A PSA blood test is added for selected men, based on age, family history, and the exam. A high PSA is not a cancer diagnosis. It is a reason for a clearer next step, which may be a repeat test or a referral for further assessment.

Family history of prostate cancer in a father or brother, and symptoms before 50, are reasons to come earlier than a routine age milestone.

Common questions

Does every man need a PSA test in November?

No. November is a reminder to pay attention to urinary symptoms. PSA is used when age, family history, or the exam makes the result useful.

Is a weak stream always prostate cancer?

No. Enlargement and infection are more common causes. Blood in the urine or a rapidly changing stream still needs a urologist so cancer is not assumed or missed.

Can prostate tablets from a pharmacy replace a visit?

No. Those tablets can hide symptoms and are unsafe for some men. The cause should be identified first.
